Your Brain Is Basically a "For-You Page"- follow growth!
Ever feel like your thoughts have a life of their own—kind of like a never-ending TikTok feed? Every thought is like a video, showing up for your attention. Here's the thing: just like social media algorithms, your brain learns what to show you based on what you interact with the most. If you’re constantly stuck on negative thoughts, your brain says, “Oh, they love this content!” and serves up more of the same.
But guess what? You get to decide what shows up. You can turn your mental feed into something that lifts you up instead of dragging you down. Here's how:
My Story: Rewriting My Inner Feed
Let me share a bit about how I started applying this idea. At one point in my life, I was flooded with fears of not being good enough, battling self-doubt, low self-esteem, and feeling like I was failing before I even tried. To escape those thoughts, I’d scroll aimlessly on TikTok, hoping to distract myself. Then one day, someone I had followed before posted content that really didn’t resonate with me—it was draining. Curious, I went to their page and realized the majority of their posts were the same, so I chose to unfollow them.
Not long after, I stumbled across a video that felt like the opposite—a breath of fresh air. Someone was vulnerably sharing their experience of overcoming negative beliefs to start creating content themselves—exactly what I was struggling with at the time. I followed them, and as if by magic, more and more uplifting videos started appearing on my feed. These videos inspired me to improve my business and think differently. Every time I logged on, I felt GREAT—empowered, capable, ready to take on the world.
But the moment I turned off my phone and faced reality, the effect fizzled out. My inner “For-You Page”—my mind—was still stuck in negativity. It was an unfiltered mess: thoughts like “no one cares what I have to say,” “I’ll just screw it up anyway,” or “people I know will make fun of me” dominated my mental feed. Without realizing it, I was actively engaging with these thoughts every day—giving them the mental equivalent of likes, shares, and comments. They were holding me back, keeping me stuck.
This was the wake-up call I needed. I realized it was time to unfollow those thoughts, even though it wouldn’t be easy.
How I Started Curating My Mental Feed & Following Growth
I won’t sugarcoat it—rewriting your inner algorithm takes work. At first, I wanted to snap my fingers and fix everything, just like clicking a button on TikTok. But that’s not how our minds operate. I had been training my mental algorithm for years—decades, really—and many of those early years had been influenced by others’ beliefs and attitudes, especially my parents. Their outlook shaped my thought patterns, and while they didn’t mean harm, those patterns weren’t exactly uplifting or healthy.
Changing your inner feed isn’t a quick fix. It’s a daily decision you make to step in and consciously choose which thoughts to engage with. At first, it feels frustrating because it’s slow—but those small, consistent choices lead to big transformations.
How Your Mind’s "Algorithm" Works
Your brain is basically like TikTok’s secret sauce—it notices what you focus on and doubles down on it. Spend time thinking, “I’m just not good enough,” and suddenly, your inner feed is full of self-doubt, replaying like a bad trend. But the good news? You can “like” the thoughts that empower you, and your brain will start bringing more of those to the top.
Here’s How To Hack It
Catch the Pattern: Start noticing your thoughts. Which ones feel good? Which ones leave you stressed? Think of it like watching your own mental feed—are you stuck on the drama, or are you scrolling to find the good vibes?
Swipe Past Negativity: You don’t have to entertain every thought that pops up. If it’s toxic or unhelpful, mentally “swipe past” it and focus on something better—like a thought that makes you feel proud or hopeful.
Flood It With Positivity: Follow the good stuff! Fill your mind with positive “content”—whether it’s practicing affirmations like “I’ve got this,” spending time on hobbies you love, or surrounding yourself with people who inspire you. The more you interact with uplifting thoughts, the more your mental feed improves.
Trust the Process: Change doesn’t happen overnight, but every small shift counts. Just keep curating the feed in your head, one choice at a time.
You’re in Charge of the Feed
Your thoughts don’t have to control you—you can take control of them. Think of it as editing your For-You Page to reflect the amazing person you are and the goals you’re working toward. You’re the creator of your mental feed, and the possibilities are endless.
Next time you’re scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, take a moment to check in: What does your brain’s feed look like? And what are you choosing to “like” today?
Remember, Unfollow Negativity, Follow Growth.... YOU GOT THIS!
With Love,
Karissa
